Holly Kartchner of "We the People" Comes to Historical Society
Holly Kartchner, Blackfoot High School government teacher, is the featured speaker at the Bingham County Historical Society (BCHS) program February 1. Ms. Kartchner is the 2011 recipient of the Idaho State Journal's Education/K-12 Business and Achievement Award. She also received the 2011 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Citizenship Educators Award.
She will be speaking about the "We the People" class. This class teaches high school students about the United States Constitution. The class focuses on how the constitution applies to our laws and to our lives. Students compete at the state "We the People" competition in Boise in February. If they win the state competition, they then represent Idaho at the national competition in Washington D.C. in April. Blackfoot High School has won the state champion for three consecutive years.
Ms Kartchner will also discuss the Civic Voices project she is doing in Honors History. This is part of a global project designed to create a virtual classroom, connecting students from around the world. Students also make connections with local people who have made and continue to make history.
BCHS members receive a monthly newsletter filled with historical stories and articles. Society dues are only $10 a year. Visitors may obtain BCHS membership at the program, which takes place at 7pm at the Senior Citizen Center in Blackfoot, 20 E Pacific. BCHS invites the public to attend what promises to be an interesting and informative evening.cost
